The psychiatry clerkship offers several clinical sites from which to choose. For the 200-10 academic year, there are a total of 7 clinical sites.

Walter Reed Army Medical Center
Inpatient Unit
Located on Ward 54, students will see a variety of patients on this inpatient setting, which is open to both dependents and military service members. Patients admitted to this service usually require acute stabilization (because of safety issues, either harm to self or others) as well as medication and psychosocial intervention. Students will be assigned to treatment teams and be expected to perform intakes and follow their assigned inpatients for the course of their hospital stay.

Partial Hospital
Located on Ward 53, students rotating on this service will follow patients in an intensive outpatient setting. Students on this service will be expected to participate in intakes and followup interviews. These patients typically are referred to the partial service from the inpatient service (where there is further management required, but the patient is deemed safe for outpatient treatment) or outpatient settings (for example, those patients requiring more assistance but not require an inpatient psychiatric admission).

Consult Liaison Service
Located on the 6th floor (in between Area 61 and 63), students will see a wide variety of psychiatric presentations. Students will see psychiatry's interface with many outpatient/inpatient services and expected to perform intakes and participate in treatment planning. Students will see patients in many settings, to include the emergency room during business hours (e.g., emergency psychiatric assessments), pre-op evaluations (e.g., gastric bypass, transplants), pain clinic, and psychiatrically ill medical inpatients. The service also sees all OEF/OIF military members and this is regardless of presence of psychiatric conditions.

Malcolm Grow Medical Center
Addictions service
Located on the 4th floor of the main hospital, students will participate in an intensive addiction outpatient service. Patients are typically referred from a number of sources (e.g., Command, self-referral, ER consults, inpatient consults, etc.). Although the main presenting diagnoses are drugs, alcohol, sex, and/or gambling, students will also evaluate and manage the comorbid psychiatric diagnoses. Students are expected to participate in the evaluation and followup of their assigned patients. Because of the importance of their involvement, there is also significant interface with the patient's Command and family members.

National Naval Medical Center
Inpatient Service
Located on 7 West, students will participate in the care of psychiatric inpatients. Patients admitted to this service usually require acute stabilization (because of safety issues, either harm to self or others) as well as medication and psychosocial intervention. Students will be assigned to treatment teams and be expected to perform intakes and follow their assigned inpatients over the course of their hospital stay.

Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute
Located in Falls Church, Virginia (by the NOVA hospital complex), students will participate in the care of chronically ill psychiatric patients in one of the largest state psychiatric hospitals in the state. Patients are typically referred from the surrounding community and are either voluntary or involuntary (e.g., court ordered). Students are expected to participate in the evaluation and treatment of their assigned patients over the course of their hospital stay.  Location: Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute, 3302 Gallows Road, Falls Church, Va. 22042.  Contact Person: Linda Burns, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. St. Elizabeth's Hospital
Located in southeast Washington DC, students will participate in the care of chronically ill psychiatric patients. Students are usually assigned to John Howard Pavilion, where they participate in the evaluation, treatment, and competency determination of the patient population. Referral sources to the ward often include the court, jail, and the DC Police. Most, if not all patients, are court-mandated to the ward until their competency hearings. Location: Saint Elizabeths Hospital, 2700 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, SE, Washington, DC 20032.  Contact Person: Dr. Sylvia Atdjian (202-645-8754).

Tripler Army Medical Center
This site is located in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Students will participate in the care of psychiatrically ill patients on an inpatient psychiatric setting (either on the active duty and/or VA ward) and an outpatient/inpatient setting on a busy consultation liaison service.

Wilford Hall Medical Center
Located in San Antonio, Texas, students will participate in the care of psychiatrically ill inpatients on Ward 4D (which is one of the ONLY inpatient psychiatric wards in the Air Force), as well as those patients evaluated and followed by the consultation liaison service. While on at Wilford Hall, students will be assigned to treatment teams and be expected to perform intakes. They will follow their assigned inpatients over the course of their hospital stay.
