Please review the grading policies for the psychiatry clerkship. Any questions should be directed to the Clerkship Director.

1. The overall final psychiatry clerkship grade is made up of five components: the clinical supervisor’s evaluation, the preceptor’s evaluation, the final NBME exam score, the end-of-rotation OSCE score and the Team-Based Learning score. Failure to complete all required elements of the clerkship may result in an “F” as a final grade in spite of passing evaluations from the preceptor, clinical site and a passing exam grade.  The department reserves the right to adjust a student's grade if any concerns about appropriate professionalism are raised during the clerkship.

The final following weights are given to each component of the clerkship:

Ward grade: 35%

Preceptor grade: 35%

NBME Exam: 20%

OSCE: 5%

Team-Based Learning: 5%

______________________________

A student who earns an A or B has satisfactorily completed the requirements of the Department of Psychiatry’s third-year clerkship.  No additional work is required.

A student who earns a C has satisfactorily completed the clerkship, but is required to complete a 4-week behavioral science rotation during his/her fourth year in order to enhance his clinical skills.

A student who earns a D has not satisfactorily completed the clerkship.  Remediation of at least 4 but up to 6 weeks (at the discretion of the department) of clerkship-level rotation must be completed in order to fulfill the requirements of the clinical clerkship

A student who earns an F has failed the clerkship.  He/she must remediate the entire clinical clerkship.

In order to pass the rotation, a student must pass the NBME subject examination in psychiatry.  The minimum passing score is set at the beginning of each academic year at the yearly national 10th percentile consistent with other USUHS clerkships.  The minimum passing score this academic year is 65.

If a student scores a 65 or higher, that score is calculated along with other assessment measures to determine a final grade.

If a student scores less than 65, he/she must retake and pass the exam.  Until that time, the student’s grade will be incomplete.  Upon passage of the exam, the minimum passing score will be calculated with other assessment measures to determine a final grade.   If a student fails the exam more than once, additional remediation may be required at the discretion of the department.
